When i usually do my groceries, it would be a race for time, go in, get the items in the list and then off I go. Since i had my last paper today (hurray!!!!), I went for a long mindless wandering around the shops, looking at grocery items. I know it's weird, but it is one of my favourite things to do when i have time. The weather has been pretty good for coffee and tea drinking lately, so I thought I'd grab a box of Chai Tea to try. Instead I was distracted, I went on looking at the different tea leaves that were on sale for Twinings (that's the tea that you see Nigella Lawson sipping on tv). Lady Grey, Earl Grey, Irish Breakfast, Ceylon Orange, Lapsang Souchong.... etc.
Lapsang Souchong caught my interest, sounded so exotic. Have heard of it in some cafe's extensive tea list and some other occasion.
Label reads: " Lapsang Souchong tea comes from China's Fujian Province and Taiwan. The unique flavour of Lapsang Souchong is produced by laying the leaves on bamboo trays and allowing smoke from pinewood to permeate through them. Twinings Lapsang Souchong is an adventurous tea with a unique smoked flavour and dark rich colour. Drink it with or without milk."
To try or not to try?? 10 tea bags, what have I got to lose?? The tea comes from China, probably won't taste that bad. Maybe I would like it?? Okie dokes, i am getting it.
Wooooww............. the overpowering waft of smokyness was the first thing that hit me when opened the packaging. Blehhhhhh...... really smells like smoke. This has gotta be the most disgusting smelling tea ever. At this point, I was really regretting why I hadn't just gone for the Chai tea as I originally intended. Uh ohh...
Staring at the dark brown liquid, i braved myself to take a tiny sip. Smells like smoke, tastes like SMOKE! Yucks. Still not giving up, i doused some sugar and milk into it. Much better, i think the milk tamed the smoke smell. Still tastes a bit weird. But guess what, i still finished the whole cup of tea. The more you sip it, the more you get used to the weirdness of it. That's so WEIRD!
As a conclusion, I like this tea as much I like being in a room full of ppl smoking ciggies. Don't think I'll be trying any new teas for a long long time.
Sometimes when trying something new, you'll be disappointed and wishing you would have just done what you have usually done. Sometimes you get surprised and find something new to like.
I may not have fallen in love with Lapsang Souchong, but at least I know how it tastes and smells like. And....... i can tell you that Lapsang Souchong is definitely for the ADVENTUROUS ppl. No kidding.
Sigh..... 9 more tea bags to go. Anyone wants to give it a shot??

Can this help a smoker kick the habit or will this make him/her start smoking? : )
I wouldn't mind giving it a try ... : )
Exams finished? Go watch some more Jap dramas!
OMGGGGG joey!!!
I did the same thing as you!
I bought the same tea some time ago.... 9 tea bags left now.
Didnt even finish the first one.. =p
Hahhaa..this is so hilarious!
I really regretted buying the tea...i think i had the same thought as you..tea from china, sounded exotic and nice.. hmmm..why not.
Then after the first sip, i thought to myself, that's it... no more being adventurous next time.
=pppp
I should have put some sugar and milk... hehe
~g~: Hahah, you will be receiving some special tea tomorrow night. Try it and tell me what you think.
Yay!! There is another guinea pig.
Yuppers, exams are over for the moment. Am watching jap dramas bit by bit. Lovin' it!!
fishie: HAhahahaha, now i know someone is in the same boat with me. That is why we are both special ppl.
Thanks to Fishie, I have tried it. Verdict ... bllleeeeaaaaahhhhh ... to my surprise adding hot water made the smoky taste stronger! Tried adding milk but then it started to taste like some ancient chinese medicine. The type that your parent forced you to drink when you're naughty.
Never thought tea could taste that bad, now we know!
hahhaa....so hilarious..
i wonder why twinings even approved this tea to be sold in the first place..
well maybe some ppl do like it hey?
maybe the older generation ppl...
Ahahahahah, ~g~, you are good sport. Someone's blog actually says that Lapsang can be used to impart smoky flavour on meat without having to use firewood), which is a brilliant idea. Heheheheh, might keep tea for cell group forfeit!!!
Fishie, i'm sure there would be ppl out there that likes it. What maybe honey to some, maybe poison to others. Anyways, i think Chai Tea is the most adventurous i will ever be in terms of tea. Ahahahha, i think i shall stick to coffee. If I strike lotto, will buy some Kopi Luwak to try together :p
